What is a WAN?

A WAN (wide area network) is a communications network that covers a large territory. It can be spread across cities, states, or countries. Such networks can be private to connect parts of a business or they can be more public to connect smaller networks together.

Some businesses may have a WAN consisting of cloud services, headquarters and small branches. So WAN should connect all of those parts of the business together.

Regardless of what the WAN connects to or how far the networks are from each other, the end result is always unambiguous, so that different small networks from different places can exchange data with each other.
